On December 26, 2006, police officers in Israel began clamping down on internet gambling operators, including Internet Companies that operate websites that offer backgammon. Since Backgammon is generally considered a game of skill, many believe that it should not be banned or considered illegal.
Some of the well-known gaming websites that are handled and maintained by Israelis are PokerStars, 888.com, and Titan Poker. While the main bases of the majority of Israeli owned and operated online gambling businesses are in places like Gibraltar and The Isle of Man, similar to U.S. companies whose bases are located in Costa Rica and Antigua, many of these companies hire employees in Israel for marketing purposes.
According to some sources, Head of the Police Investigations and Intelligence Unit in Israel, Major General Yohanan Danino, has given notice to Interlogic, the operator of the Play 65 Internet Site, that both the police and the Attorney General consider the operation and maintenance of a gambling website a major criminal offense. He also warned that Interlogic must immediately cease allowing their players to gamble on the results of Backgammon games or on the game itself with real cash. Even gambling with virtual money is strictly prohibited.
