Backgammon Basic Strategy

There are more than a few possible strategies to backgammon. Many of them are very abstract and are more of an approach to the game than a strategy. There are some players who prefer to play an "open game", meaning they are more likely to leave their pieces in open positions and move in long jumps. There are some players who will do almost anything to keep their pips protected and stack them into little skyscrapers. Any approach is legitimate, as long as it is dynamic enough and takes into account probability and potential risks.

The best strategy is the one that you feel most comfortable with and enjoy playing. Try and think ahead of every move. If you are leaving a piece in an open position, calculate the chances to close it in the next round. It may take a lot of time and practice but you must learn how to choose the best move in any situation. Though luck is unpredictable, adjusting yourself and steering the game to your favor is possible. If you'll choose on every round the move that is most likely to get you where you're heading, you will be less dependant on luck. Practice this basic game concept and try to find you the strategy that fits you most. Remember that your strategy will directly influence the way you enjoy the game. After you learn all about backgammon you'll be able to enjoy the game more as well as win more game.
