Well-known Japanese Backgammon player Masayuki "Mochy" Mochizuki has been crowned as the best backgammon player in the world after edging out reigning world backgammon champion Lars Trabolt in a thrilling final of the Monte Carlo World Championship on July 19th, 2009.
Supported by online skill games community CasinoRip.com, the week long 34th yearly Monte Carlo World Championship take place at the 5-star Fairmont Hotel and featured one hundred seventy-three of the best backgammon players in the world competing for a part of the 200,000 euros prize pool. Entry costs in the tournament started at 200 euros for beginners, 400 euros for intermediate and 1,000 euros for the championship flight not including the 240 euros registration cost.
One of the favorites in the Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship tournament, thirty-year old Masayuki Mochizuki edged out Denmark's Lars Trabolt twenty-five to twenty in the final to take home the winner's cheque worth 62,280 euros.
Although well-known recording superstar George Benson entertained participants in the tournament including Danish poker pro Gus Hansen, Matvey "Falafel" Natanzon, Francois Tardieu and Neil Kazaross during the pre-tournament gala evening, this year's world backgammon championship will be best remembered for crowning the first ever Japanese World Backgammon Champion.
